What is Chicken Kafta?

Chicken Kafta is a flavorful Lebanese kebab made with ground chicken, bringing a lighter twist to the traditional beef kafta. Many Middle-eastern countries have their own variations, where it’s sometimes known as โ€œkofta,โ€ but the Lebanese version relies on fresh ingredients like ground meat, parsley, onions, and a unique spice blend (7-spice mix, salt, and pepper).

After sharing myย beef kafta recipe, which has become the most popular recipe on my blog, I wanted to offer a chicken version for those looking for a leaner option. The result is just as delicious, with the same versatility and flavor that make kafta a beloved staple across Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisine.

How to Make Chicken Kafta

Chicken kafta is easy to prepare and can be made ahead, making it ideal for busy weeknights or meal prep. This recipe is perfect for grilling or pan-frying, so you can enjoy it year-round.

For grilling, shape the kafta mixture onto wooden or metal skewers, or form into 1-1.5 inch thick fingers without skewers. Grill on an outdoor or indoor grill for about 4 minutes on each side, until fully cooked. Grilled kafta is perfect for an Arab-style barbecue alongside shish tawouk and meat kebabs.

To sautรฉ in a skillet, shape the kafta into 4-6 inch long fingers or mini patties. Cook in a little neutral oil over medium heat for about 8 minutes, until cooked through. For extra flavor, add thick slices of onions and tomatoes to the pan and cook until tender.

Serving Suggestions for Chicken Kafta

Serve chicken kafta with Lebanese favorites like hummus, fattoush, or tabbouli. It also pairs wonderfully with white rice or pita bread for a complete meal. For additional flavor, add a side of garlic sauce or tahini.

Tips for Freezing and Meal Prep

Chicken kafta can be made in batches and frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze, shape the kafta and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container.
