If you love quick, easy and hearty dishes, you will love this Lebanese potatoes and meat dish known in Arabic as Batata w Lahme. Fried (deep-fried or air-fried) potatoes are tossed with sauteed meat (beef or even lamb). The Lebanese comes in with the seasoning, as the meat is seasoned with Lebanese 7 spices. You can find the 7-spice mix at any Middle-eastern grocery store, or easily make it yourself using my recipe.
How to Prepare Batata w Lahme
This dish is incredibly easy to make and only uses a handful of ingredients. I like to use russet potatoes because when fried, whether deep-fried, which is how the dish is traditionally made, or air-fried, russet potatoes tend to come out the crispiest while still being soft on the inside. Feel free to use whatever potatoes you have on hand. You want to cut them into small 1/2inch cubes and season with just salt.
For the meat part of the dish, you can use either beef or lamb, whichever you prefer. I like to use beef, specifically rib-eye. Flank steak or skirt steak are also good cuts of meat for a very small dice. Some people also use ground beef in this dish, however, I just prefer the larger diced meat for texture reasons.
The meat is seasoned with 7 spices and sauteed in a large skillet. Once the potatoes have been cooked, you will add them to the skillet and combine with the meat. I love to eat this dish with basic ketchup and pita bread. I typically will make pita sandwiches for kids along with some pickles. You can also serve with a hot sauce for a nice kick!
STEP 1
Peel your russet potatoes and diced into small ยฝ inch cubes. Wash thoroughly in cold water and drain.
*Since I am air-frying the potato cubes, I like to either pat them dry with paper towels or in my salad spinner.
This extra step will give you crispier potatoes when air-frying.
