Zaatar Grilled Cheese

Nothing beats a cheesy, warm, toasted grilled cheese sandwich. Serving it for breakfast, for lunch with tomato soup, or even for dinner, it all works. I have an exciting recipe for you guys that elevates a regular grilled cheese sandwich by adding zaatar and using the fluffy and sweet new Sara Lee® Artesano™ Brioche Bread.

Brioche Bread

Artesano Brioche Bread is sliced thick with a mouthwateringly soft texture and rich flavor, it takes this grilled cheese to the next level. This bread is made with real butter, sea salt and a touch of milk. It is made with no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, or artificial colors which is so important for me when looking for a bread to feed my family.

I found this bread at Walmart, which is where I typically purchase Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread; the ORIGINAL artisan-style sliced bread. If you are unable to make it to the store due the social distancing guidelines in place right now, Walmart does have an Online Grocery service where they provide delivery and pickup. I have taken advantage of both quite a few times.

Sara Lee® is a trusted and reliable brand with variety to satisfy different meals and occasions. I’ve been buying Artesano Bread for many years now, so I was excited to hear about their newest product, this brioche bread. This entire line of bread is so fluffy and thickly sliced, which makes for hefty and delicious sandwiches and breakfast French toast.

Aside from this, I was so happy to hear about how this brand is helping families and causes during this difficult time. “Bimbo Bakeries proudly partner with Feeding America through food donations and volunteerism, supporting our neighbors and communities where we live, work and serve.” Find other great #MealTimeSavings inspiration here.

The Cheeses

In this zaatar grilled cheese, I use both white akawi cheese and mozzarella. Akawi cheese is a Lebanese salty white cheese. It is the cheese used when making manakeesh and cheese rolls. Since Akawi is quite salty, the mozzarella is great for balancing it out. If you are not able to find Akawi cheese, queso blanco is a great substitute. You could also use just mozzarella cheese on its own.

Zaatar is what gives this grilled cheese sandwich a Middle-Eastern flair. Zaatar is a blend of Lebanese thyme, sumac and sesame seeds. To prepare zaatar to use in a sandwich like this, I mix 1 tablespoon of zaatar with 1 tablespoon of virgin olive oil.

STEP 1

Place one slice of mozzarella cheese on a slice of bread. Add the slices of Aakawi cheese on the mozzarella.

Add the remaining slice of mozzarella and top with the zaatar spread.

STEP 2

Heat up a skillet over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon of butter

Once melted, add the sandwich and cook over medium heat until the bottom is golden brown.

Nice recipes on your site but these dishes all seem common to all countries in the Eastern Mediterranean (Syria and Palestine)

Akkawi cheese for instance is so named after the city Akka in Palestine from which it originates

Yes, I definitely agree! I recently learned that about akawi cheese as well.
